Candle Shade

Sunday 20 October

1.30pm - 4.30pm

Manchester Art Gallery, Learning Studio

Maker: Emma Pinnock

Age recommendation: 16+

Craft the perfect addition to your home for the long autumn nights, with artist Emma Pinnock. This candle lampshade-making workshop is perfect for beginners and confident artists alike, with the option to work from your imagination or copy a design.

With plenty of inspiration to get you started, you will build layers of paint and ink onto fabric before transforming your individual design into a unique candle shade.

Whether you’re aiming for a free-flowing landscape, a folk-art pattern or a detailed line-drawing, Emma will guide through through the steps to create a beautiful hand-drawn, original artwork to take home and light from within.

In this workshop you will:

  • Start by planning your drawing on paper. There will be example designs to give you ideas, stock illustration sheets to use to base your idea upon, or you can even trace something you especially like.

  • Working on pre-cut fabric, lightly sketch out the rough design using pencil

  • Build up the design with light ink and paint brushes, drying and ironing as you go, developing areas of light and dark

  • Once happy with the design, you’ll use the darkest black to add in finer detail

  • Watch a step-by-step demonstration on how to construct the shade, then put together your own piece yourself.

All materials and tools needed to make the shade are provided during the workshop, as well as sheets of different design ideas in case your creative spark needs a little jump-start.

Emma Pinnock is an artist, print maker and art teacher born and bred in Gateshead and working in Manchester. Having moved away from the classroom she’s now developing her own art, inspired primarily by seascapes, landscapes and architecture, exhibiting and selling her hand-drawn lampshades and lino-cuts, and running creative workshops.
